Why should I see Dr. Holland for back, joint, or muscle pains?

  • Dr. Holland has completed eight years of education and 200 plus hours in specialized seminar training focused on musculoskeletal anatomy, functional biomechanics, sports injuries, rehabilitative and injury prevention exercises, and nutritional recommendations. Dr. Holland’s studies and experience enables her to utilize an array of different techniques to formulate a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s individual needs for more effective outcomes, without the use of prescription drugs and surgery.

How much education is required to become a Doctor of Chiropractic?

  • Doctors of Chiropractic are well educated and highly trained professionals. After completing pre-med undergraduate studies, chiropractors must complete four years of education at a government accredited chiropractic college. Furthermore, chiropractors must pass Parts 1-4 and physiotherapy chiropractic national and state board exams. Once licensed, chiropractors must complete at least 15 continuing education hours each year. Chiropractic college is similar to medical school except that chiropractic classes focus on anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition, the chiropractic adjustment and physiotherapy whereas a medical student will spend more time on pathology and pharmacology.

Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from a primary care doctor?

  • No. You can walk in or call to schedule your appointment directly with GOLD Chiropractic & Rehab.

Why do chiropractors adjust joints?

  • Chiropractic adjustments restore motion to a joint that is stiff or restricted, to normalize its intended function. The “pop” you hear is simply air being released from within the joint, and is not of much importance in understanding what an adjustment truly means.  Medical textbooks will tell you that decreased motion in a joint leads to poor joint health and arthritis. Restoring motion to restricted joints enhances the overall joint health, increases blood and nutrient flow to that region, inhibits muscle spasm, reduces inflammation, and suppresses pain.
  •   On the same token, if a joint is not restricted Dr. Holland will not adjust it.  In some cases, our joints may move too much in some areas and require stability-protocol treatments and strengthening exercises instead of an adjustment.  There is a misconception that Chiropractic care means “rack ‘em, crack ‘em, & pops”- slang for an adjustment.  But depending on your Doctor’s specialties, Chiropractic Manual Therapy also encompasses muscle & soft-tissue treatment, daily living & sports injury prevention education, rehabilitation exercises, & lifestyle and nutritional consultation.

What can I expect on my first visit?

  • On your first visit, you will receive a comprehensive, functional exam that will evaluate joint motion, muscle tension and imbalances, gait analysis, and dynamic tests that are used to diagnose the problem.  In the case of an acute, traumatic injury and other specific circumstances, an x-ray or other special imaging is sometimes warranted and will be conducted at a nearby Diagnostic Imaging Center.
  • New patient paperwork can be downloaded by clicking here to complete in the comfort of your home, and brought into the office at the time of your first visit.  If paperwork is not filled out prior to your visit, please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment to allow efficient time to complete it before your exam begins.
  • The initial visit generally takes approximately 45 minutes, where you will then discuss your options and future treatment plan with your Doctor.  At that time, mutual goals are set between you and your Doctor and treatment may begin that day or on your next visit, depending on your specific circumstance.

What is a chiropractic adjustment/manipulation?

  • Adjustments are a technique used by Doctors of Chiropractic to restore motion in a hypomobile/fixated joint of the spine or extremities. The doctor will use his/her hands or instrument to deliver a controlled, low force motion to a specific joint or segment.

Does chiropractic treatment hurt?

  • Most chiropractic adjustments and physiotherapies are painless.  In fact, chiropractic treatment can help most patients enjoy immediate pain relief.  However, if the patient has suffered a recent injury, adjustments can cause slight discomfort/soreness as the dysfunctional tissues involved are usually inflamed.  That is why offering a combination of muscle and joint manipulation to treat complex cases is important to minimize discomfort.
  • Other patients may experience sensations in their muscles or extremities following an adjustment.  This is a normal reaction as the body adapts to the changes and irritations to the nerve is relieved. Some scientists have also correlated this sensation with an increase in circulation achieved in response to an adjustment.

Can chiropractic care help someone who has had back or extremity surgery?

  • Chiropractic improves overall joint function so it is often helpful for patients who are experiencing continued discomfort following surgery, due to the injury or surgery itself.  Each treatment will be catered to your specific circumstance.

Once I begin chiropractic treatment, do I have to go forever?

NO. GOLD Chiropractic & Rehab’s goal is to return patients to their optimal, active lifestyles in the shortest time frame possible.  Each patient’s individual needs are catered to by creating a unique method for care; not a pre-determined treatment plan.  The end of treatment is usually attained when mutual goals set by the doctor and patient for optimal performance and pain control are reached.

What is the most common cause of neck and back pain?

  • The most common reason for neck and back pain is caused by a combination of  restricted joints and muscles that are too tight/stiff or too weak. For example, your low back muscles and joints may be too tight/stiff while your core abdominal muscles may be too weak.

How do I know when I can safely return to my activities and my treatment is complete?

  • The end of treatment is usually based on the achievement of mutual goals established by you and your doctor.  In addition to achieving pain relief, patients are encouraged to focus on reaching activity and performance goals as a measurement of treatment completion.  Why?  Because the temporary relief of pain does not always lead to long-term success.  While many patients experience immediate pain relief following a treatment, it may take one or several follow-up visits to completely address the dysfunction and prevent the problem from recurring.  Clinical research proves that an active approach to health care will lead to lasting physical improvements if treatment and rehabilitation guidelines are followed to allow proper healing time.  Thereby, complying with your doctor’s instructions can prevent future office visits, costs, and ultimately your discomfort.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy and for children?

  • Certainly!  Chiropractic care can help diminish the pains an expectant mother may be experiencing as her body changes to accommodate the birthing process.  A woman’s body undergoes many hormonal changes and biomechanical alterations to the joints and soft tissues throughout pregnancy.  Chiropractic soft tissue work and strengthening rehab exercises are key to providing symptom relief for the mother; especially since many medications are not allowed during pregnancy.  Dr. Holland is trained to accommodate expectant mother’s needs and will work as a team with your OB/GYN to provide safe, natural alternatives to help alleviate the pain.  And it is certainly safe for the baby!
  • Furthermore, gentle chiropractic techniques for children/infants have often times been effective in treating colic, earaches, and discomforts they may be experiencing from the birthing process that may make it harder for nursing, and more.  Although we do not claim to treat them directly; the primary goal of chiropractic is to restore joint and soft tissue function which enhances the body’s immune and nervous system.  Children usually react more quickly and require fewer treatments.

Is chiropractic safe for the older population?

Absolutely!  Before Chiropractic treatment begins, a thorough case history and dynamic examination is performed to identify the complexity of each patient’s circumstance. Chiropractic care helps maintain proper joint mechanics and muscle flexibility in the aging body.  Furthermore, when manual therapy is coupled with lifestyle, exercise, and nutrition counseling, the older patient can experience a higher quality of overall well-being.
