Methods of Treatment

Intrinsic Integrative Health’s philosophy is to combine the most effective, evidence-based therapies for joint, nervous system, and soft tissue therapy; as well as exercise rehabilitation, blood testing and nutrition consultation, and patient education to help guide you on the journey to your optimal health and performance potential.

Also called Chiropractic manipulation, the adjustment is a tremendously effective tool to address restricted joints and apply motion where needed.  Faulty joint-movement patterns will interfere with natural motions of the body and can lead to pain and tissue damage.  Chiropractic adjustments safely and effectively restore motion to restricted joints and normalize the body’s overall movement patters and by stimulating the nervous system by inducing an autonomic response for healing.  When a Chiropractic Manual Therapist delivers an adjustment, the patient’s body is safely positioned to encourage the desired movement, and a quick push or pull force is applied to the involved area.  Intrinsic Integrative Health utilizes an adjustment protocol from the Motion Palpation Institute (MPI).  MPI is defined as a biomechanically superior, evidence-based diagnostic technique used by the doctor of Chiropractic to locate joint dysfunction within the spinal column, ribs and extremities. This technique was brought to the United States in 1981 and quickly gained acceptance as a standard diagnostic tool for the Chiropractic profession around the world.  To learn more, please visit MPI’s Website at

A.R.T. is a cutting edge, soft tissue therapy designed to rid injured areas of scar tissue and adhesions that our body builds up over time.  This technique is not only the official technique for Ironman Triathlons, but also utilized by many professional level athletic organizations to help athletes recover from injuries quicker and in assisting to prevent such injuries from occurring.  Over time, when our muscles and other soft tissues are overstressed/overused and injured, our bodies lay down an unorganized, spider web of scar tissue to patch the damaged area.  Although scar tissue is not as flexible and functional as the initial tissue, it is a natural part of the body’s healing process but too much can be a harmful thing. By implementing A.R.T. therapy to injured tissue, it aids the body’s soft tissue to heal in a more organized manner and promotes normal movement patterns and flexibility to be preserved.  A.R.T. is not a massage.  Instead, this technique is considered a manipulation of soft tissue and adhesions.  Pain, tingling/numbness, and other symptoms can be caused from dysfunctional scar tissue and adhesions.  ART treatment can be administered after a physical exam and knowledgeable and trained A.R.T. provider.  Whether you are an athlete, stay-at-home Mom, laborer, or secretary, we are all prone to over-use types of injuries that put repetitive stresses on our bodies throughout our daily lives.

FAKTR (pronounce Factor) is a concept for treating soft tissue dysfunctions using manual and instrument-assisted techniques of treatment while utilizing various forms of rehab exercises at the same time.  The acronym stands for Functional And Kinetic Treatment with Rehab.  The FAKTR concept was developed by Dr. Greg Doerr and Dr. Tom Hyde who began to experiment with treating soft tissue/fascial disorders by combining their knowledge, tools, and techniques for a full treatment package.  FAKTR focuses on patient evaluation and treatment to restore function, while treating in those positions where function deficits appear during activities of daily living.  Hence, while your Doctor’s trained eye observes and treats the apparent condition, you will perform specific movements correlated with your unique situation.  The FAKTR concept is quick to apply, easy to understand, and produces rapid results.

Kinesio Taping, the newest and most advanced form of taping has been shown to have amazing results with athletes and  chronic pain patients (such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, tendonosis, etc.), as well as many other muscular and joint issues.  Kinesio Tape is a functional, pliable tape that is applied over the skin to be worn through athletic events and activities of daily living.  At Intrinsic Integrative Health we use this technique of taping for its four major functions: to support muscle, remove inflammation, correct and add stability to problematic joints, and to activate the body’s natural pain relievers.  These four benefits have attributed to faster healing time and escalate success in the training and rehabilitation phases of injury.  When applied properly, Kinesio Tape can support weak muscles, rehab overused muscles, decrease pressure to reduce edema (swelling), and assist in stabilizing the injured area.  Kinesio Tape activates the body’s neurological and circulatory pathways to increase muscle function and the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  To learn more, please visit the Kinesio Taping® Association International website at

Chronic inflammation (the result of irritants, and toxins) housed in our bodies is being recognized more and more in today’s research as being the root cause of “modern” dis-ease.  Chronic inflammation and pain has reached epidemic proportions in our nation today.  Research shows that chronic inflammation causes diffuse musculoskeletal pain, digestive distress, fatigue, cognitive decline, auto immune dysfunction, anxiety, depression, and many more.

By identifying one’s triggers through blood chemistry, food sensitivity and allergy testing, stool samples and others, the focus is to manage inflammation from the inside out on a long-term basis through supporting the body and healing the root cause.  At Intrinsic Integrative Health, quality nutritional and vitamin supplements are available from many credible American supplement companies that cannot be found over the counter.  You may find it interesting to know that many over-the-counter vitamin supplements may contain as little as 2% of the claims made on their labels.

At Intrinsic Integrative Health, we focus on educating our patients about their specific conditions and supplying them with rehab exercise protocols that require each patient to take an active role in their health.  Rehabilitative exercises are an important part of the treatment plan, and crucial in promoting the body’s strengthening and healing processes for long lasting results.  Research has shown that patients with chronic pain improve much faster with increased activity and exercise.  All rehab exercises are intended to strengthen, stabilize, induce efficient functional movement and range of motion, and ultimately reduce pain, inflammation, and dysfunctions.  These exercises may be done at your visit with Dr. Holland and recommended at home.  Dr. Holland will develop an individualized rehab exercise protocol specifically catered to each patient’s unique condition, type of injury, and sport or activity they wish to return to.  Scientific evidence has stated that exercise is more effective when combined with manual therapy, such as Chiropractic adjustment and soft tissue muscle work.

Neuromobilization techniques involve the treatment of the nerves in the extremities.  When a patient presents with symptoms of nerve irritation, specific motions used to decrease this aggravation may be prescribed to encourage normalized nerve function and thereby decrease the discomfort.  At Intrinsic Integrative Health, we use these techniques for the treatment of syndromes such as carpal tunnel, tarsal tunnel, and other nerve entrapment problems.
